Five eras of the European sky

From the cast-iron spire above the Champ de Mars to the glass corkscrew of Lakhta Center — European high-rise architecture has traveled from engineering experiment to visual manifesto.

1889

Eiffel Tower · Birth of the European skyscraper

The Shard · A new London vertical

Renzo Piano completes the 310-meter glass shard above the Thames. It becomes the tallest building in the European Union and reignites the London high-rise boom on the south bank of the Thames.
